ANGLIA in Bloom judges visited Bury St Edmunds last Thursday to rate its community involvement, floral excellence and sustainability.
Judges Nolan Mills and Brian Gardner met school children, community leaders and park rangers on their tour, which took them to Nowton park and the Howard Estate, coming to an end in the popular Abbey Gardens.
“They loved the feel of the town - you’re driving past 1,000 years of history against a back drop of astonishing floral displays,” said Simon Pott, chairman of Bury in Bloom.
“Bury is Bury and we were looking forward to coming here - let’s just say it’s not disappointed,” said Mr Mills.
“It’s wonderful, we’re just looking at horticultural excellence really,” added Mr Gardner, who went as far as saying Bury had a ‘favourable’ chance of winning another Gold award.
Steve Burgess, head gardener for St Edmundsbury Borough Council, said: “I think, considering the conditions we were faced with, we’ve done amazingly well to get to this sort of standard.”
