Jubilee tribute stolen
GATES unveiled in honour of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee have been stolen from Lakenheath Sports Pavilion.
The wooden gates were stolen from the pavilion entrance, in Eriswell Road, between 9pm on Tuesday and 7am on Wednesday.
David Gathercole, chairman of the Playing Fields Committee, said the theft was very disappointing.
Police have said offenders removed the hinges from the bespoke gate’s posts to steal them.
The oak double gates, which were each about 8ft wide, were unveiled on August 4, during Lakenheath Carnival celebrations.
The gates sat at the bottom of a gravel path leading to the pavilion and were both engraved with the words ‘Diamond Jubilee 2012’.
Mr Gathercole said the Playing Field Committee had put a tremendous amount of work into securing funding for the custom-made gates to mark the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.
Both Lakenheath Parish Council and Forest Heath District Council donated money.
Vice-chairman of the Playing Fields Association, Tracy Whitehand, described the theft as ‘sickening’.
She said: “They were tied up as much as we could do with a heavy duty chain with lock that held the two together, so we felt they were as secure as you could make gates.”
Mrs Whitehand said the theft was particularly disappointing due to the on-going success of the sports pavilion, which is used by many community groups.
The metal gate that was previously used to secure the site has been reinstalled by the Playing Fields Committee.
Police are investigating the theft and have asked the public to contact them if they have information regarding the location of the gates or saw anything on the night of the theft..
