John Peel Centre needs £80k

THE John Peel Centre needs another £80,000 to complete its planned £1.3 million refurbishment.

More than £20,000 has already been raised towards the project by allowing businesses to sponsor parts of the renovation.

The steel works and electrical and lighting systems are currently being installed at the centre.

The centre’s chairman, Andrew Stringer, said although the project needed more money to complete, the building work was still on schedule.

He said: “We still have £80,000 of the £100,000 to raise but that will just have to be done.

“We have recently had some new offers of help from people in the music industry.

“We have even had Jarvis Cocker mention it on his Radio 6 programme this week.

“All the steel work is now in.

“We have had cables being laid in this week for the sound and lighting systems.

“It is getting very exciting now. We have had a tremendous amount of support for the project we just need to get the last bits done.

“We are still on schedule and it is all going very well.”

Upcoming events are the Stix music festival this weekend and a benefit concert in Norwich on October 10, featuring two of John Peel’s favourite bands The Fall and the Undertones, are expected to bring in extra funds towards the project.

Andrew said: “It is exciting to see the centre coming along and the metal work finished.

“We aim for the whole project to be finished in December.

“It should be a brilliant Christmas.
