Jobseeker claimants drop across the region

THE young jobless rate in Breckland is below the national figure for the first time since November.

Figures released on Wednesday for June show the West Suffolk and Thetford areas reflecting the national downward trend.

But Breckland shows the most significant drops. With 670 18-24 year old Jobseeker Allowance claimants compared to 775 in May the rate falls to 7 per cent compared to a national rate of 7.3. Its 2,249 claimants of all ages is down 193 on May and 287 down on the year’s highest in February but is still 52 up on June, 2011.

St Edmundsbury’s 465 18-24 claimants is 25 down on May giving a rate of 6.2 per cent, matching the rate for the East which the borough exceeded in April and May. Its overall figure of 1,652 is down 68 on May and 122 below its March high but still 208 more than June 2011.

Forest Heath’s 18-24 claimant rate is the lowest in West Suffolk ay 3.7 per cent and at 235 is 20 lower than in May and down from a February high of 300 but is 35 more than 2011. Its 902 claimants of all ages is 56 down on May but 110 more than June 2011.

Mid-Suffolk has the lowest rate in West Suffolk for claimants of all ages at two per cent with 1,158 claimants, though its rate of 5.8 per cent for 360 18-24 claimants is only just below the regional average.
