Judges will be at Benson Blakes in Bury St Edmunds today as the pub competes in the final three for the title of Britain’s best burger.

The independent pub in St Johns Street , is up against two small pub groups – Peach Pubs and Oakmans Inns in the National Pub Food challenge, run by the Morning Advertiser.

As well as trying the Benson’s burger, the judges will also give chefs 30 minutes to make, cook and serve a special burger, made from a box of mystery ingredients.

“We are hopeful of winning because burgers are our main strength whereas the other two only have one burger,” said Steve Blake who runs the pub with son Tim.

“Our burger is as close to 100 per cent beef as you can get (we add some herbs, salt, pepper, parsley and eggs.

“The meat is minced to our specification by MeatIn in St Johns Street and is served in a bun made to our specification by Gastrono-me, also in St Johns Street.”

The pub burgers are a hit with Americans from RAF Lakenheath and Mildenhall – this month it features two super bowl themed burgers with the Baltimore Ravens featuring crab cake, garlic mayo and salad, while the San Francisco 49ers includes monteray jack cheese, avocado salsa, rocket and salad.
