An inquest into the death of Laveham snowboarder Emily ‘Mimi’ Watts, is to open and adjourn today.

Emily, who was 26, died a week ago today after her life support machine was switched off in a hospital in France.

She had suffered serious brain damage after she fell and was buried in a snowdrift in the French Alps. Emily, known as Mimi to many of her friends, suffered a heart attack, and her brain was straved of oxygen for 45 minutes while she was rescued.

She spent five days in hospital on life support before French doctors, who had warned there was no chance of her recovering, decided to switch off the machine.

Emily was a former pupil at St Benedict’s Catholic School in Bury St Edmunds.

Her brother Rory, 27, said: “The world lost a bright shining star, but her memory will live on and continue to inspire us all.”

He said the family will launch a charity called Good Story to ‘nurture creative talent’ and help young people find funding and advice to start their own businesses.

The inquest into her death is due to be opened and adjourned in Bury, today.
