Inquest into West Suffolk Hospital death

A WOMAN admitted to West Suffolk Hospital after a fall died five days later from the effects of deep vein thrombosis, an inquest has heard.

The family of Lilian Sallis, 65, of Conyers Way, Great Barton, believed the hospital failed in its care, said lawyers speaking on behalf of the family afterwards.

The inquest heard that there was inadequate record keeping, staff did not always attend to her toilet needs and water was placed by her broken wrist instead of on the other side of her bed.

There were also question marks about the use of compression stockings.

At the hearing the ward manager at the time apologised to the family for staff failures to help Mrs Sallis get to the toilet and for inadequate record keeping.

Assistant coroner Yvonne Blake recorded a narrative verdict that Mrs Sallis was taken into hospital on June 7 and died on June 12 following ‘apparent uneventful’ post operative care after surgery.
