Inquest finds man took his own life
A 65-YEAR-OLD father of two took his own life after the break down of his relationship, an inquest has heard.
The badly decomposed body of Robert Arnold, of Beechfields, Brandon, was found in the Little Ouse by an off-duty police officer on July 1 this year.
An inquest held at West Suffolk House, Bury St Edmunds, on Tuesday, heard that Mr Arnold had gone missing on May 24.
Coroner Peter Dean said Mr Arnold’s family had become concerned that he would take his own life after his relationship with his partner had ended.
Their fears were confirmed when a letter was found in Mr Arnold’s clothing, giving directions to a suicide note on his computer, according to a report from Detective Inspector David Giles, of Suffolk Police.
Mr Arnold’s note said it would be ‘the last words that I will write’.
The search for Mr Arnold had had been going on for a month when his body was found.
Daniel Johnstone, of Hertfordshire Police, found the body caught under a tree when canoeing on the river.
Det Insp Giles said Mr Arnold must have walked at least a mile from where his Citroen Xantia was found parked before entering the river, as his body was found so far upstream.
Speaking at the time, Mr Arnold’s family described him as a ‘bright, cheeky character’.
He had been in Brandon for five years after moving from his birthplace of Hornchurch in Essex and lived with his 88-year-old mother, Joyce.
Dr Dean recorded a verdict that Mr Arnold took his own life.
