Struggling to find work, Charlotte Grant took her homemade cordials to the Bury St Edmunds Christmas Fair and was amazed by their success.

Charlotte, 26, who runs Thurston based Hedgerow Cordials has just launched an online shop.

All of her cordials are handmade using ingredients where possible that have been locally sourced or foraged.

“I always made things like preserve, chutneys, jellys and jams as a hobby,” she said.

“Then a friend of mine took some mulberrys from our garden and made a cordial. I thought what a brilliant idea.

“I made them with everything out of our hedgerow to start with hence the name.

“Then in Christmas 2011 I was struggling to find work so I took my cordials to the Bury Christmas Fair. They sold really well, so I started building up the business from there.”

In July she decide to pack in her seasonal job with the Suffolk Wildlife Trust and devote her efforts full time to her own business.

It paid off the very next month when she won a national gold star in The Guild of Fine Food Great Taste Awards for its Chilli & Lime flavour.

Stockists include Josef’s Vegetarian Cafe in St Johns Street, Bury, Cracknells in Thurston and The Olde Farm Shop in Nowton.

Hedgerow Cordials makes 12 flavours two of which – Suffolk Raspberry and Chilli & Lime – are available the all year round.

Other flavours include lemon & ginger, pear & cinnamon, lemon & mint, wild nettle, rhubard & ginger, elderflower & strawberry, victoria plum, spiced apple, spiced berry, and sloe & apple.
