‘I may have been travelling a little bit fast’: Mildenhall man convicted of dangerous driving after ploughing into two vehicles in accident near Stowmarket
A driver who admitted he may have been travelling ‘a little bit fast’ when he lost control and ploughed into two oncoming vehicles, has been convicted of dangerous driving.
Philip Bellasis, 26, denied the charge but was found guilty by a jury at Ipswich Crown Court on Wednesday.
Bellasis, of High Street, Mildenhall, had been driving a BMW on the A1120 between Stowupland and Forward Green last October, near Stowmarket when he crashed into a van and another car.
Judge Peter Thompson ordered him to complete 180 hours of unpaid work and banned him from driving for 18 months.
Bellasis must pay £1,000 towards prosecutions costs and was told he will have to pass an extended retest after his ban finishes.
Self employed carpenter Roy Hammond told the jury how he had been driving home when he saw a BMW coming in the opposite direction.
Mr Hammond said: “As soon as I saw the car I could see it was out of control.”
Bellasis said he might have been travelling ‘a little bit’ too fast as he emerged from a 30mph limit into an unrestricted section of road just before a bend. Mr Hammond estimated Bellasis was driving at 70mph.
He had been overtaking when the accident happened – Bellasis said he had completed the manouere when his car slid and hit the van causing it to roll. Mr Hammond was shaken but unhurt.
