Huskies hit the trails in King’s Forest
HUSKY RACING in Thetford Forest
It might not have been snowing but the sandy tracks of King’s Forest made ideal going for the penultimate husky race meeting of the season.
British Siberian Husky Racing Association race organiser Sally Leich, from Thetford, said the sandy soil in Thetford Forest, of which King’s Forest near Elveden is part, were ‘wonderful’ for their sport.
“It’s a very well drained, level surface great for the dogs feet, being grass or sand.”
That was good news for the 100 teams taking part after a poor season with races in other parts of the country cancelled due to flooded tracks or frozen ruts.
Sally explained: “The dogs can pull you out of a skid, but a frozen rut brings the rig to a dead stop and you go over.”
That is risky when teams may be doing 20-25mph. Sally’s team averaged 18.66mph over the 2.95 mile course to win the class B dog race at the weekend.
Though there was a touch of frost on Sunday, it still was not cool enough for the huskies to put in long runs.
Sally said: “It’s never really cold enough for huskies in this country. In northern Sweden the mushers will be complaining if its ‘only’ minus 10.”
The final meeting of the season is also in Thetford Forest, at Cranwich Heath, near Mundford, on March 2 and 3.
