Headteacher of Bury St Edmunds school tells of GCSE anger as legal challenge in made to High Court

A body of headteachers is due to submit a legal challenge over this summer’s GCSE grades ‘fiasco’ to the High Court by Friday.

Geoff Barton, headteacher at King Edward VI school in Bury St Edmunds is a council member of the The Association of School and College Leaders which is seeking a judicial review.

It follows tougher grading by exam boards for this summer’s English GCSEs which left thousands of students with a D grade when last year they would have gained a C.

Mr Barton said about 70 heads and deputy heads attended a meeting in Reading last week and agreed to seek the judicial review.

“The most striking thing at the meeting was the level of anger that continues about the whole fiasco and the fact that here we are seven and a half weeks on and still nothing has been done about it,” Mr Barton said.

The meeting came on the same day it was reported that 45,000 out of 65,000 students are due to resit their GCSE English exams next month.
