Residents And Councillors Were Calling For Mildenhall Air Fete To Be Cancelled Amid Fears It Could Become A Potential Terrorist Target.

Cllr Philip Haylock, Chairman Of Beck Row Parish Council, Said The Majority Of Councillors Feared The Event Would Make The Base And Surrounding Area Vulnerable To Attack.

A Spokesman For Raf Mildenhall Said The Base Planned To Hold The Event At The End Of May.

If Cancelled, There Would Not Be Another Show Until 2005 Because Planned Runway Resurfacing Work Meant The Following Year Had To Be Cancelled.

A Fourteen-Year-Long Search Came To An End With The Discovery Of A 303 Lewis Machine Gun.

It Was Added To One Of Suffolk’s Finest Collection Of Firearms And Put On Display At The Regiment Museum, In Bury St Edmunds.

The Lewis, Which Could Be Carried By One Man And Deliver 500 Rounds Per Minute, Was A Valuable Addition To The Suffolk’s 45 Strong Collection Of Weapons At The Keep, Gibraltar Barracks, In Newmarket Road.

It Was Of Particular Interest Because Two Such Guns Had Been Strategically Positioned In The Turrets Of The Museum, In Defence Against Aircraft Attack During The First World War. They Were Never Used.

Plans To Build A High-Rise Block Of Flats Near The Abbey Gardens In Bury St Edmunds Were Revealed At A Press Conference.

The Site Suggested For The 10 Storey Flats, The Vinefields, Was To Be Surrounded By Homes, Creating A Total Of 100 Housing Units.

Opposition To The Scheme Was Expected At The Time Full Council Was Asked To Approve It, Particularly Around Whether Views From The Gardens Would Be Spoilt By The Tall, Slim Building.
