Harriets to reopen tomorrow

A POPULAR Bury St Edmunds teashop will open tomorrow for the first time since a fire on Saturday, which gutted the neighbouring Cupola House, forced it to close.

Harriets, in Cornhill, will open from 10am but a number of businesses will remain closed.

They include Lloyds Bank, Nationwide Building Society, Specsavers, Phones 4 You, Sahara, Jessops and Bella Lingerie.

Regular meetings are being held between the St Edmundsbury Borough Council, Bid4Bury and the affected businesses.

And any new information will continue to be made available on the Bury Free Press website, and will be posted on white boards outside Croasdales Chemists, in the town centre, as well as on the council website at www.stedmundsbury.gov.uk

Yesterday, at 5.45pm, an 80 tonne mobile crane arrived to allow structural engineers to survey and record the chimney of Cupola House.

Today, working from an open steel cage suspended from the arm of the crane, they started taking the bricks out by hand.

They are aiming to reduce its height by 4.5 metres.

There is still the risk of collapse after this work is carried out.

It may take until the weekend to be completed as the work in weather dependant.
