Hare-coursers hit landowner with car
Police are warning members of the public to be on the look out for hare-coursers after a man was deliberately struck with a car following a confrontation in Hitcham on Sunday.
Officers were called at around 10.45am to reports of hare-coursers on private land in Hitcham, near Stowmarket.
When the landowner, a man in his 60’s, confronted them, they drove their car at him.
They also drove towards a woman, who was not hit, and into the victims’ car before leaving in the direction of Preston St Mary.
The man was taken to West Suffolk Hospital, in Bury St Edmunds, where he received treatment for a back injury and a cut hand.
Police are keen to speak to anyone who may have seen the vehicle used in the assault.
It is described as a blue Subaru Legacy Estate, registration number T618 DFC, and is thought to be extensively damaged.
Two or three offenders are thought to have been involved in the incident.
The driver is described as a white man, aged 40-50 years old, around 5’9” tall, with light blonde hair.
A second man is described as white, in his 30s, around 5’9” tall, with blonde hair, of muscular build and was wearing a tight blue T-shirt.
Anyone with information should call Suffolk Police on 101.
Hare coursing is a sport in which dogs chase hares and has been illegal in the UK since 2004.
The most obvious sign of coursing taking place is a group of vehicles parked in a rural area, by a gateway to farmland, on a grass verge, or on a farm track or bridle path. There will often be estate cars, four wheel drive vehicles or vans involved.
On Sunday, there were also reports of suspected hare coursing in Flixton, Ampton, Rattlesden, Wyverstone and Pakenham where vehicles accessed farmland without permission.
Anyone who sees hare coursing taking place is advised not to approach the participants but to contact the police immediately on 999.
