Hardcore Hobbies to open bigger store in Bury St Edmunds
Jay Mills outisde the new Hardcore Hobbies store on Risbygate Street in Bury.
Hardcore Hobbies in Bury St Edmunds is to open a new store four times the size of its current shop, next week.
The retailer which specialises in BMXs, skateboards, skates and scooters, as well as clothes and accessories, opens a new store in Risbygate Street on Tuesday.
The business owned by Jay Mills has been in St John’s Street for 13 years – but Jay said the new store will allow it to offer a different shopping experience.
“The new store is four times the size of our old one.
“We have been doing well over the years – we have taken tiny steps and not rushed things, but we have outgrown where we are.
“We have built up a good reputation over the years – we have been described as the biggest shop of its kinds in the UK and we have even had mail orders to send stuff over to Australia.
“We just enjoy what we do. We have eight staff and everybody in the shop is involved in skatepark sports.
“We are more like a family than a workforce,” he said. Hardcore Hobbies organise the annual skatejam at the town skatepark off Western Way – the skatepark itself has grown in reputation over the years and is set to undergo improvements as it attracts more youngsters into the sport.
Jay said the old store – which currently has a sale and which closes at the end of trade on Saturday – had always had a good reputation for having items in stock.
But the new store – which will include a sofa, drinks and snacks machines – will add to that by allowing shoppers to spend a bit more time in the store where they can chat with staff who will share their expertise.
The new store will open from 10am to 8pm for its launch on Tuesday.
Its regular opening hours will be from 10am to 6pm except for Thursday’s when it will open at 9am, and Sundays when it will close at 5pm.
