Happy birthday to 'fantastic' Ruth

Great-grandmother Ruth Sanderson has celebrated her 100th birthday with her sons.

Ruth, who is a resident at Cornwallis Court care home in Bury St Edmunds, was taken out by sons Clive, from Boxford, and Hamiliton, visiting from the Netherlands, to a birthday meal at Ravenwood Hall on Friday. They then celebrated the occasion with a cake with fellow residents.

"She is a lovely woman, absolutely fantastic," said Clive.

Born and raised in the North East of England, Ruth worked as a secretary in the railway offices in Newcastle. She gave up work when her sons were born. Her husband John worked in a chemical works as a cashier but he died when Clive was just nine years old.

Ruth, who has a sister Joan who is 10 years younger and living in Chester, moved to Boxford more than 20 years ago. She lived there up until three and a half years ago when she started to suffer from dementia and moved into Cornwallis Court.

As well as her two sons, Ruth has six grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Granddaughter Helen visited Ruth from Singapore last month.
