A group that offers cerebral and social satisfaction to retirees is celebrating 25 years of existence.
The Bury St Edmunds branch of the University of the Third Age (U3A) was founded in 1988, offering those who are out of work and aged 55 or above a chance to learn with like-minded people.
The group’s 780 members are able to attend lectures and discussion groups on subjects ranging from archaeology to latin languages.
Graeme Bell, 62, chairman, said the group had been acting as a social and intellectual catalyst.
“The group gives people a chance to gain greater insight into subjects they are interested in and meet people.
“We have had scores of people who have recently moved to Bury join the group and boost their social lives,” he said.
Mr Bell said the group were hoping to have a ‘special’ guest speaker at a lecture later this year.
