Green Party wins borough council by-election

The Green Party has triumphed in a by-election for the Risbygate ward, in Bury St Edmunds, with 51.7 per cent of the vote.
Julia Wakelam secured 394 votes in the St Edmundsbury Borough Council election followed by Conservative candidate Susan Glossop with 239 and Labour’s Clifford Hind with 128.
The turnout was 21.05 per cent out of an electorate of 3,662.
The 60-year-old, of Northgate Avenue, said: “I’m absolutely delighted and I feel really quite privileged because it’s quite an endorsement.”
After speaking to residents , Ms Wakelam said their ‘number one issue’ is parking. She said: “Particularly along Fornham Road, residents are really badly inconvenienced by the parking.” Ms Wakelam, who has lived in Bury for 38 years, said she is also concerned about the borough council’s Vision 2031 ‘with its emphasis on housing development on the edge of town’. The by-election was called after Cllr Joshua Hordern left the area.
