Green and pleasant show is a success

Flowers, fruit, vegetables and handicrafts were under scrutiny in Stanton on Saturday as the village held its annual show.

The village hall hosted the day-long event, where entries from competitors aged five upwards were judged.

Alan Johnson, one of the organisers, said the Stanton Village Show committee had feared entries would be well down on previous years when they started taking them in last Tuesday, but a sudden influx of entries on the day of the show itself meant it was almost comparable to previous years.

"The standard was very good," said Mr Johnson. "The only entries that were possibly weaker were the vegetables, but the weather has not been the best. Lots of the entries were worthy of prizes and everyone had good onions, but some people were saying they had no red tomatoes yet, which we haven't suffered before."

Entries were submitted in categories including vegetables, flowers, cookery and handicrafts, with sections for children aged five-nine and 10-16.
