Golf could iron out health problems

A round of golf may be the answer to health problems this summer.

Starting this week, a new health initiative is taking place in Stowmarket to help people facing issues with their weight or mental health.

GPs from Stow Health and Woolpit Health Centre will refer patients to take part in a golf taster programme, where they can enjoy a free session at Stowmarket Golf Centre.

Patients, who are seen as benefiting from some gentle exercise, will get the use of the nine-hole course, free individual coaching and the chance of a follow-up lesson at the half price rate of 4.25.

The project, which is part of the Healthy Ambitions Suffolk Initiative, was created by golf professional Duncan Burl and his wife Paula. They noticed the health benefits which golf can provide, burning up to 400 calories an hour, and approached local surgeries.

Mr Burl, who is donating his help at no cost to the NHS said: "Golf can bring massive benefits to a huge range of people, including those with weight difficulties, problems with their stamina, or those who may have mental health issues."

He and his wife have asked each GP practice to refer four patients a week until the scheme ends in October.

Dr Richard West, a GP at Woolpit Health Centre, said: "It is the sort of exercise which anybody who can walk any distance could do. It will particularly benefit patients with anxiety and depression by helping them to socialise and build confidence.

"It's also ideal for people who need to take more exercise, either because they have weight problems or have cardiovascular disease."

Sally Hogg, head of the health improvement partnerships at NHS Suffolk, said the scheme linked perfectly with the aims of Healthy Ambitions Suffolk and also underlined their mantra – that a small change can make a big difference.

The initiative will be looked at by NHS Suffolk, with the possibility it could spread across other practices in Suffolk.

Anyone who is currently registered with Stow Health or Woolpit Health Centre and is interested in taking part should discuss it with their GP or alternatively contact Duncan Burl on 01449 736392.
