Gearing up for the Bury St Edmunds bike ride
The wheels will not come off this year’s charity bike ride in Bury St Edmunds, despite thieves stealing promotional material.
Organisers are gearing up for this year’s St Edmunds Wheel on June 10 and are just hoping for better weather.
But their determination to raise funds has not been dampened by the theft of two Union Jack flags which had been gone up alongside a St Edmunds Wheel banner on the A14 at Rougham.
“They only went up last Monday. It was to promote the fact that this is Jubilee year. Then this Monday night somebody took them,” said Ian Turner, one of the trio who started the event formally known as the Bury Bike Ride, 14 years ago.
“Somebody has gone out of their way to stop and cut these flags loose. I don’t know how sad these people are – really I would have thought they could find something better to do.”
Organisers will be selling ducks for the duck race on Bury market in two week’s time on June 2 – tickets for each duck cost £2 with a choice of five colours.
The race takes place in the Abbey Gardens as part of the St Edmunds Wheel on June 10 at 1pm. Money raised from the duck race will go to St Nicholas Hospice Care.
The June 10 event will feature both a bike ride from the Abbey Gardens with a choice of 15, 25, 50 and 100 miles – and a walk from the Rugby Club with six, 15 and 26 mile routes.
The event will raise cash for the Bury Free Press’ Helping Hands appeal, the hospice, and armed forces’ charities.
