Fuel hike u-turn welcomed

SUFFOLK and Norfolk MPs have welcomed the Government’s u-turn on a planned fuel duty hike.

Bury St Edmunds MP David Ruffley said the move to delay a 3p per litre rise, originally earmarked for August, until January follows months of lobbying.

He said: “I have been inundated over the past 12 months by constituents demanding that the Chancellor (George Osborne) should do something about the duty on petrol, which has made filling up the family car a nightmare.

“For those of us who live in Suffolk, a car is a necessity not a luxury.”

Mr Ruffley stressed that more could be done to introduce legislation to ‘force retailers to give fair prices for fuel’ as ‘petrol retailers are not passing on the full cost of world oil price falls’.

West Suffolk MP Matthew Hancock hailed the announcement.

He said: “The Government is to be congratulated for taking action to help people being squeezed by the cost of living as a result of high global oil prices.

“There are areas of West Suffolk where fuel prices have historically been very high.”

Meanwhile, South West Norfolk MP Elizabeth Truss has also been lobbying for the freeze.

She said: “This will be a welcome announcement for residents and businesses. It will ease the pressure on house hold budgets and company finances, helping to drive growth in South West Norfolk.”
