Frost insurance for sugar beet growers
THE National Farmers Union has announced that it is working on a frost insurance scheme for UK sugar beet growers.
The scheme will offer protection for growers against the loss of a proportion of their crop due to severe frosts, which hit farmers in 2010/11.
The NFU said it aimed to have the insurance scheme ready for the 2012/13 campaign.
Although farmers will have to pay this year, next year the cost will be incorporated into the beet price.
Robert Law, NFU Sugar vice-chairman, said: “We are confident that the introduction of this insurance package and enhanced late delivery allowance payment demonstrate we have listened to our members and have worked with British Sugar to address growers concerns with regard to longer campaigns.”
