Fraud attempt foiled by suspicious shop manager

A MAN who tried to use another person’s bank card to buy goods in Bury St Edmunds has received an eight week suspended prison sentence.

Jide Sade-Akinlade, 27, pleaded guilty to three counts of theft by finding and one of fraud by false representation at Bury Magistrates’ Court last Thursday.

He was sentenced to eight weeks in prison, suspended for 12 months, and was ordered to pay £85 in costs.

Prosecuting, Rosalind Cappleman told the court that at 4.10pm on May 6, Sade-Akinlade attempted to buy two Apple Macbook pros from Stormfront, in the arc shopping centre, Bury.

He asked to pay £50 in cash and the balance on a Barclaycard, but the store manager became suspicious and arranged to delay the transaction while checks were made.

After five minutes, Sade-Akinlade left without the goods saying he needed to use the toilet but he did not return, said Mrs Cappleman.

He was arrested at the railway station the same day and, while being interviewed by police, said he had found some cards in a different name.

Mrs Cappleman said he then produced a card wallet with a number of cards in it.

In mitigation, Michael Whatley said: “He says he found these cards near to where he lives, just lying on the ground. He should have handed them in but he didn’t. He decided to use one of the cards but was caught.”

He told the court Sade-Akinlade, who lived between his mother’s home in Plumstead High Street, London, and his girlfriend’s home in Cheshunt Road, London, had found a retail assistant job after a long period of unemployment, which he was due to start Monday of this week.

“He’s making no excuses, he came to Bury to commit the offence,” said Mr Whatley.
