Football club gets moving date

The long-mooted move of Bury Town Football Club to a community facility at Moreton Hall is scheduled to happen in 2012, a council has said.

St Edmundsbury Borough Council has announced that a public consultation into the multi-million venture will begin soon.

And the move has already been welcomed by Cllr Frank Warby, who represents Moreton Hall.

"It is a good idea. The most fans Bury Town gets is about 400 so it's not going to impact on parking and it will give youngsters somewhere to go," he said.

The new facility is subject to planning permission and an application is due to be submitted later this year. It will include facilities to develop the town's young sides, including girls' football.

The council has already agreed to fund 1 million towards the project, with other funding due from the Football Foundation.

Russell Ward, chairman of Bury Town FC, said: "This is a wonderful scheme for Bury and Moreton Hall, developing our national sport at a local level in what will be a great community facility."

Cllr Lynsey Alexander, council cabinet member for sport, said the scheme followed the success of a similar project in Haverhill.

"This is a fantastic opportunity for children to get fit and have fun, as well as a wonderful new facility for the wider community and Bury Town Football Club," she said.

The start date for the consultation is to be announced shortly.
