Facebook group saves ‘The Voice’
Cedars Park Commuhnity Interest group couldn't get their new newsletter delivered due to the bad weather. They set up a facebook group and 48 hours later had 20 volunteers. All are young mums and are delivering the letters after dropping their kids into school.
The first edition of Cedars Park’s community newsletter was saved by army of young mums - recruited on Facebook.
After months of planning, editors Dusty Miller and Holly Trueman had finally got the newsletter to print when the British weather closed in.
The heavy snow meant they were told by the distribution team that it couldn’t deliver The Voice of Cedars Park to 1,700 houses on the estate in Stowmarket.
A Facebook campaign was immediately launched to find volunteers willing to spend their morning delivering the newsletter.
And after just 48 hours, 20 local residents had offered their services.
Holly said: “Cedars Park Community Interest Company have a Facebook page so I put on an appeal on there.
“Parents at Cedars Park Primary School also had a Facebook page so I posted on that page aswell.
“I didn’t know what I expected - I know the power of Facebook but didn’t think the response would be so great.
“The residents association gave us a map and I highlighted where our team would deliver. The only problem was some of the streets around the estate are very confusing - it can be a bit of a rabbit warren around here.
“Many of them are young mums, some who work part-time or as teaching assistants at the school.
“I know there are a lot of people out there who value what we are doing and that we are just scratching the surface of a volcano of community spirit.”
Volunteer Caroline Grove said: “I know how hard Dusty and Holly have worked for our benefit and it is the least we can do to ensure that their hard work is not ruined by a little bit of British weather.”
Rusty Miller said: “The response was incredible.
“Within 48 hours we had 20 people and enough to deliver to the whole estate.
“They are mainly young mums. It is lovely to see this kind of community spirit combined with the use of modern technology.”
