English GCSE resits results lead to more questions than answers says headteacher of Bury St Edmunds school
The headteacher of a Bury St Edmunds school said todays results from the GCSE English resits, only lead to further questions.
At King Edward VI School in Bury, 11 pupils resat the exam – seven of whom gained GCSE grades.
The resits followed this summer’s GCSE debacle in which exam boards toughened up the grade boundaries, meaning some pupils who would have achieved a C grade, were left with a D.
Geoff Barton, headteacher at King Edward VI, said: “I am delighted for the students that got their C grade on resitting their exams.
“I think there are going to be questions about the marking and how strictly they kept to the grade boundaries, and whether it makes for a comparable outcome.”
He said it ‘seemed odd’ that pupils who had not received extra English teaching got better grades on their resit than when they had taken their exam at the end of 11 years of teaching.
In the meantime the outcome of a judicial review into this summer’s GCSE results is due on January 13.
County Upper School in Bury meanwhile did not have any pupils resitting the exam.
“We achieved 83 per cent at grade A* to C in English in the summer, which was as we expected,” said headteacher Vicky Neale.
“We feel sorry for the students who were affected but we did expect the English GCSE grade boundaries to go up and an 83 per cent A* to C rate was almost exactly what we expected.”
