England Rugby World Cup Winner Andy Gomarsall MBE joined a team of 20 people who abseiled 39m from the roof of Twickenham Stadium to raise money for the Commando Spirit Appeal on behalf of The Royal Marines Charitable Trust Fund (RMCTF).

The former scrum-half who is now Director of Network 2 Supplies, based in Bury St Edmunds, was joined by colleague, Tom Swetland.

Gomarsall developed a deep appreciation for Royal Marines after working with them on training exercises while playing professional rugby.

He said: “The Royal Marines are the epitome of sacrifice and camaraderie. While preparing for the Rugby World Cup in 2004 and 2007 I undertook training with Royal Marines and I learned more about team work during those sessions than I did during my whole rugby career.

“I chose to Take The Leap for the Commando Spirit Appeal as a way of giving back to Royal Marines, not only through raising sums of money for them, but also by increasing awareness of their courage.”

The event earlier this month is expected to have raised more than £20,000.
