Edward’s 400th blood donation
Edward Selsby, 71, from Stowupland, has received an award after donating blood for the 400th time.
A grandfather-of-six is rolling up his sleeves at Addenbrooke’s Hospital today - to donate blood for the 410th time.
Edward Selsby, 71, of Sycamore Road, Stowupland, first gave blood 45 years ago at the United Reform Church in Stowmarket after being taken there by his father.
He was recently awarded a certificate for his 400th donation - and is determined to carry on giving.
Edward said around ten years ago Addenbrooke’s discovered he had a high platelet count, cells vital in the treatment for people undergoing chemotherapy for cancer or leukemia.
Since then , Edward has travelled a 90 mile round trip to the hospital in Cambridge every two or three weeks.
Edward said: “They found out that I have a high platelet content about ten years ago and that’s when I started travelling to Addenbrooke’s.
“It feels really good to be helping people out.
“I get real satisfaction - I have seen people come in here who have been touched by leaukemia or cancer and have needed platelets.
“They come here and shake hands with me and say thank you.
“I have been going down to donate blood every two or three weeks - I always feel great when I donate.
“I will continue to donate blood as long as I’m fit and well.”
Edward, a former manager at a welding company, now helps out at his son’s gym Fitta Bodies in Bury St Edmunds.
Edward said more people should try and donate but ubderstood it was difficult in the economic climate.
He said: “I would advise people to go out and give blood if they can.
“But I know it can be difficult for people to go regually.
“You often see people down there who donate once and once only.
“It can be difficult for people to lose a day’s pay going to donate blood .”
