East pedals to peak of cycle league
PEOPLE in St Edmundsbury and Mid Suffolk are more likely to get on their bikes than the average East of England resident.
Figures published by the Department of Transport yesterday show that in the East of England 12 per cent of people cycle for 30 minutes or more a month, which is beaten by only two other regions at 13 per cent.
But in St Edmundsbury the figures rises to 14 per cent and Mid Suffolk boasts a healthy 16 per cent pedalling.
Though that is the highest for Suffolk, it is less than half the 35 per cent who cycle round Cambridge, which has the largest percentage of pedal pushers in the country.
Forest Heath, in spite of its Victoria Pendleton connection and annual Mildenhall Cycle Rally, has only 11 per cent of its population cycling – a mere one per cent above Suffolk’s least pedal-powered population in Ipswich.
In Norfolk, Great Yarmouth lets the side down with only nine per cent, though Breckland is on a pedal par with St Edmundsbury.
