Dramatic rise in MPs’ expenses
MPS’ expenses have been revealed, showing an increase over the past year.
The Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority, which has released the figures, was set up in the wake of the expenses scandal in 2009.
Bury St Edmunds and Stowmarket MP David Ruffley, has claimed the lowest amount of any of our MPs. The figures show his is the lowest claim and the lowest increase.
In 2010/11 he claimed £15,098 in expenses while last year he claimed £17,663.
His expenses were dwarfed by a £20,000 increase in the amount claimed by Central Suffolk MP Dr Dan Poulter.
He recorded the biggest expenses rise of any of our MPs.
In 2011/12 he claimed £51,326, a rise of more than 50 per cent against the £30,404 claimed in 2010/11.
Expense claims by Matthew Hancock, MP for West Suffolk, rose by around by a third from £31,051 to £43,230.
Mr Hancock said it was right that MPs’ spending was ‘rigorously examined’ and ‘published in a transparent way’.
South Suffolk MP Tim Yeo claimed £45,166 in 2011/12 compared to £33,129 the year prior, while Elizabeth Truss, MP for South West Norfolk claimed £32,112 compared to £25,765.
However the increases for Dr Poulter, Mr Hancock and Ms Truss need to take into account the fact that they were newly elected in May 2010 so do not reflect a complete 12 month period for 2010/11.
Mr Ruffley had the biggest increase to staffing costs with a rise of £27,000, claiming £111,278 this year. This was still below Dr Poulter’s £113,312.
