Donations continue for town’s foodbank

A steady stream of donations suggests Bury St Edmunds believes a foodbank is not just for Christmas.

The Bury St Edmunds Foodbank, run by the Gatehouse charity, opened at the beginning of November to provide emergency food packages to people in need, perhaps because benefits had not been paid or a fire had left them with nothing.

A Bury Free Press-backed campaign for donations before Christmas brought in four tonnes, but Gatehouse chief executive Amanda Bloomfield said on Tuesday they are still getting regular donations.

Most come via a collection point in Asda but Amanda said: “Some of the stuff going in the bucket there isn’t from Asda so people are taking it there to make a donation.”

She added that they have plenty of cereals and biscuits but are short of basic toiletries, like toothpaste and soap, and tinned goods, especially meat and fish.
