Doctor’s patient admits assaulting police officer sent to remove him

A man became aggressive after being refused a doctor’s signature on a medical certificate he needed to claim benefits, Bury St Edmunds Magistrates’ Court heard yesterday.

Police were called to Stowmarket Health Centre on December 20 to reports of a doctor having problems with patient Michael Christopher Bass.

Bass, 29, of St Mary’s Avenue, Haughley, pushed a policeman ‘with considerable force’ as he attempted to remove him, said Wayne Ablett, prosecuting.

In mitigation, Nic Wray said Bass suffered with long term mental health problems and had become agitated after waiting for two hours to see a doctor.

Mr Wray said Bass was now without the benefits on which he relied and had been excluded from all medical centres in Stowmarket.

Bass pleaded guilty to assaulting a PC. He was conditionally discharged for six months and ordered to pay a £15 victim surcharge.
