THE DIY store B&Q has come to the rescue of a charity that helps young offenders make amends to the community.

When young people are sentenced to make reparation by carrying out unpaid work, the charity Catch22 gets them doing jobs like repairs, painting and tidying up the community.

But the Bury St Edmunds charity’s reparation officer Louise Barnett said: “We don’t have a budget for the materials and the people we paint for are on low incomes, which is why B&Q donating paint is good.”

Brian Byers, B&Q’s Bury community liason person, said it nationally supported several charities but its individual stores were encouraged to help their communities.

“We get hundreds of letters and we can’t always say ‘yes’ but we look at them as community projects,” he said.

“If Louise comes to me with a project, I’ll see if we can help her.

“It’s part of our recycling programme, rather than putting paint and wood into landfill.”
