Disabled charity closes

A Suffolk charity which helps hundreds of disabled children take part in leisure activities has been forced to close due to funding cuts.

Out & About matched disabled five to 25-year-olds with a volunteer to help them enjoy a leisure activity of their choice.

However, the Claydon based charity, which supported 300-400 young people in the East of England a year including 40 to 50 in West Suffolk, is to close following cuts in Government funding and a drop in donations.

Bosses were unable to fill the £200,000 gulf needed to keep going for the next six months leading to the demise of the charity which launched in 1984.

All sixteen members of staff will lose their jobs.

Chairman Michael Wood said: “It’s sad that Out & About will no longer be able to make a significant impact on the lives of disabled children and young people.

“We have, as a board and management team, explored all the options to solve our financial problems but in the current economic climate it has proved incredibly difficult. We would like to thank all our supporters, volunteers and colleagues who have worked with us.”
