A disability centre on Moreton Hall is renewing its appeal for volunteers to help to raise funds for urgently needed renovations.

Charity Papworth Trust’s West Suffolk Disability Resource Centre (WSDRC) needs to update the accessibility of its building in Bunting Road, including the replacement of its lift.

Anna West, WSDRC centre and facilities co-ordinator, said: “It’s really important that our visitors can be as independent as possible while they are using the centre.”

Of the current lift, she said: “At the moment, only one person who uses a wheelchair can use it at a time, and it’s not that easy to get in and out of. You also have to continually hold a pushdown button while you are using it, which can be tricky.”

She added: “It would also be fantastic to be able to fit automatic door openers around the centre, for example on the toilet doors, so that people who use wheelchairs or walking aids can move around more easily and independently.”

For the past 13 years, the centre, which provides services and advice for disabled people, has supported more than 6,000 people every year.

Now it is looking for volunteers to form a new supporter group to help it achieve its target of raising £65,000.

Papworth Trust’s community fund-raiser Andrea Chupacova said: “By joining the group you’ll get a chance to meet like-minded people and make a big difference to your local community. You can choose how much time you commit and be as creative as you wish.

“The group can be as formal or informal as the people involved want it to be. All the funds raised will help us to continue to provide our vital services for disabled people.”
