Designer selected for Craft Council support scheme

Thurston-based designer Victoria Carter has been chosen by selectors from Smiths Row, the University of Hertfordshire and the Crafts Council as one of ten makers who will receive a six-month programme of creative and business support as part of the Craft Council's Hothouse East scheme.

A printed textile designer from Thurston has been selected for the Craft Council’s Hothouse East scheme - a programme to help new creative craft talent.

Victoria Carter, 35, is one of ten designers in the East to be put forward for the scheme, run in partnership between Smiths Row and the University of Hertfordshire, which provides a six-month programme of creative and business support.

Victoria began as a graphic designer working in London but always had a passion for textile design and fashion.

After graduating with a masters degree in printed textiles from London’s Royal College of Art (RCA) in 2010, and having her work included in a Marks and Spencer RCA winter collection, Victoria began dreaming of setting up her own business.

She has recently launched Carter and Sykes, a new luxury accessories, label and hopes the scheme will boost her business.

She said: “You learn all sorts of things including business modelling, peer networking, manufacturing and product design.

“You also receive creative support from the Crafts Council and from Smiths Row.

“It will really help me both creatively and from a business point of view.

“It is all very exciting.”

As well as fabric design, Victoria also lectures textile, graphic design and fashion at the University College of the Arts on Norwich, the Cambridge School of Visual and Performing Arts and at West Suffolk College.
