Death of cyclist was accident

THE death of a cyclist, who was killed in a car crash last year, was ruled as an accident by the Suffolk coroner on Tuesday.

Philip Scarff, 37, from Shelland, suffered fatal head injuries in an accident on Old London Road, at Copdock, Ipswich, on August 27 last year.

Adam Clint, the driver of the 4x4 which was involved in the accident was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving but no charges were brought.

Mr Scarff, a chartered surveyor, was a partner at local estate agent Lacy Scott and Knight. His wife, Jennifer, was at the inquest in Ipswich.

The inquest heard evidence from several witnesses and a police collision investigator who said it was not clear how fast the 4x4 was travelling or where the impact took place. Suffolk coroner Dr Peter Dean ruled Mr Scarff’s death as accidental and said that there was nothing Mr Clint could have done to avoid the collision.

He said: “In this situation we have looked at all of the available evidence touching the very sad loss of Mr Scarff. In these circumstances it does seem that what took place was a very tragic accident.”
