‘Death Café’ coming to Suffolk

A MEETING aimed at turning the taboo subject of death into a comfortable conversation topic is being launched in Woolpit next month.

Nigel George is to host the county’s first Death Café, a concept he learnt about after attending a number of impersonal funerals last year.

These services prompted the Woolpit solicitor, who was familiar with discussing death through his work with wills and probate, to set up his own funeral service.

The 52-year-old said: “Despite the fact that we have to cope with the deaths of many of those close to us throughout our lives – and live with the knowledge that one day it will be our turn – death is still one our great taboos and we just don’t talk about it.”

Billed as an evening of life, death, cake and contemplation, the Death Café aims to help people share their feelings about death – as well as their hopes for their life – in a relaxed and safe environment.

Mr George added: “The fact is that sharing our experiences, our hopes and our fears can be both therapeutic and liberating. Recognising that our lives our finite can also help us focus on living positively and achieving as much as we possibly can while we’re here.”

It will take place over tea and cakes on October 24, in the village institute at Woolpit, starting at 7pm.

It is free to attend, although donations for cakes would be appreciated.
