Daredevil sisters carry on fund-raising tradition
Jo and Jackie Campbell
TWO sisters will follow in the footsteps of their daredevil uncle to raise money for charity.
Jo Campbell, 34, of Bury St Edmunds, and Jackie Campbell, 36, of Pakenham, will parachute jump from 10,000ft to raise money for the Duchenne Breakthrough Fund.
The charity funds research into duchenne muscular dystrophy, which causes muscles to weaken over time leading to disability and shortened life expectancy.
Jo and Jackie’s uncle, Nigel Brendish, was a stunt pilot who starred in hollywood blockbusters, including the James Bond film For Your Eyes Only.
In 1982 Mr Brendish undertook one of his most daring challenges, flying over the English Channel upside down in a light aircraft, to raise money for the Duchenne Breakthrough Fund.
Mr Brendish’s fund-raising efforts for the charity received media attention from both sides of the channel as well as a letter from the Duke of Edinbrugh.
Cuttings and images were compiled for him by the charity in a book that has inspired his nieces.
Jo and Jackie will skydive at Cambridge Airfield on March 1, 2013, marking the 25th anniversary of Mr Brendish’s death.
Jackie said that she and Jo had decided to jump in Mr Brendish’s honour and hoped to raise more than £1,000 for the charity while increasing awareness.
More than 100 people will jump on March 1, one person for each of the 100 children born with duchenne muscular dystrophy each year, in a day of fund-raising organised by the Muscular Dystrophy Campaign.
