Cyclist back at work after Rwandan trip
RAPTUROUS applause echoed through West Suffolk House, in Bury St Edmunds, on Monday, as council workers welcomed an exhausted colleague back after months spent cycling in aid of Sport for Rwanda.
As part of a three-strong Cycle To Rwanda team, Pete White, a senior planning officer for St Edmundsbury Borough Council, spent 66 days cycling 6,000 miles through 12 countries, from Bury to Kigali, in Rwanda.
Thirteen of his colleagues donated annual leave to make his trip possible, during which time his one-year-old daughter, Sophie, took her first steps.
The 33-year-old, from Great Whelnetham, said: “It was a wonderful experience, an emotional rollercoaster and I’m really pleased that I never gave up.”
Returning to work, confronted by banners and streamers, Mr White told of the moment when, handing his passport to enter Rwanda, he burst into tears.
“One minute I’d be crying and the next I’d be laughing, but I made it,” he said.
