Cricket club hit for six by security issues

A cricket club has bemoaned the lack of security at Breckland Leisure Centre after a spate of vandalism and break-ins.
Peter Terry, volunteer co-ordinator, said Thetford Town Cricket Club has ‘had enough’ of break-ins at its pavilion and damage being done to its pitch, nets and equipment.
The club has directed complaints to Parkwood Leisure, who own the land, but nothing has been done, according to Mr Terry.
“It’s been an ongoing issue for us, “ he said.
“We rely on goodwill from members and our governor cuts the outfield so we can play.
“But that is all for nothing if it is being vandalised.”
A tea urn and drinks were stolen from the club’s temporary portable buildings in a series of incidents last year, while a pool table was also tampered with in the new £70,000 pavilion.
Litter, including plastic bottles left by other users of the recreation ground, is often left on the pitch, according to Mr Terry.
A car was also seen driving on the outfield after a gate was left open.
Mr Terry said the situation was unlikely to improve while people were able to get access to Mundford Road through a hole in the perimeter fence.
“People can just walk across the pitch - it’s a safety issue as much as anything.
“Someone is going to have an accident on the Mundford Road and it’s just waiting to happen,” he said.
Mr Terry said the club wanted a ‘more responsible’ approach from Breckland Leisure Centre.
A spokesman for Parkwood Leisure said the leisure centre was looking at the problem.
“We work closely with our partners to ensure all sports can be enjoyed safely at our facilities and they are maintained to a high standard.
“This issue has been raised by Thetford Cricket Club and we are working to resolve it to the satisfaction of all as soon as possible,” he said.
