A COUPLE who met at a Bury St Edmunds hospital celebrated their diamond wedding yesterday, still very much in love.

Johanna ‘Han’ and Albert ‘Bert’ Shepherd, of Out Westgate, Bury, met at the old West Suffolk Hospital, where Han worked as a cook and Bert as a foreman for Harvey G Frost, which had been hired to rebuild the medical facility after a fire.

“He used to do his rounds and come through to have a look at me,” said Han, 89, who ‘ditched’ another man to be with Bert, 91.

Their first date was spent at a flower show in Bury’s Corn Exchange and they were married at St Edmunds Roman Catholic Church.

They have two children, Kevin and Teresa, and five grandchildren.

“The whole marriage has been wonderful, it’s probably because he doesn’t hear half of what I say,” joked Han.
