County councillor has heart attack

Suffolk county councillor Trevor Beckwith was taken to hospital last Thursday after suffering his second heart attack in 10 years.

Cllr Beckwith, an Independent who represents the Eastgate and Moreton Hall wards of Bury St Edmunds, was continuing to receive treatment at West Suffolk Hospital earlier this week.

On Wednesday, the 68-year-old was transferred to Papworth, the UK’s largest specialist cardiothoracic hospital, where he is due to undergo heart bypass surgery.

Speaking from the hospital this week, he said: “This is all very inconvenient with so many issues on the go. I’m not too good at lazing about.”

“I’ll be back soon, I hope,” he added.

Mark Ereira-Guyer, leader of the Greens and Independent group on Suffolk County Council, has worked with Cllr Beckwith for more than two decades.

He said: “He’s such a hard-working and diligent councillor and I think the people of Moreton Hall and Eastgate recognise that, and I certainly do as his colleague. He’s got so much to contribute and I really want him to get well soon.”

To allow Cllr Beckwith to concentrate on his recovery, Cllr Ereira-Guyer has offered to assist anyone in his wards. To get in touch with him, email mark.ereira@suffolk.gov.uk or call 07545 423841.
