County council to investigate on street parking concerns

MORE residents’ parking schemes could be introduced in Bury St Edmunds as council bosses launch a consultation to help tackle ongoing parking problems.

Suffolk County Council is to issue a questionnaire in the Springfield Road, Grove Road, Out Westgate and Hospital Road areas of the town to ask people about their parking issues.

Residents have voiced their concerns to ward councillors about workers and students parking outside their homes to avoid parking charges.

Cllr David Nettleton, who represents the Risbygate ward on St Edmundsbury Borough Council, said he had first put the issue up for consideration in 2005.

He said: “Every time I go around, someone will come upto me and ask ‘when are we going to get residents’ permits?’.

“If the majority are in favour of it they will introduce it.”

The questionnaires ask people whether and when they experience problems parking in their street.

A spokesman for the county council said: “We ae starting a significant investigation following a number of issues being raised over the on-street parking in certain areas of Bury St Edmunds. Questionnaires will be sent to residents in the Springfield Road/Grove Road and Out Westgate/Hospital Road areas of the town in the next couple of weeks.”
