Councillor completes Channel swim

BURY St Edmunds swimmer Paul Hopfensperger successfully completed his crossing of the English Channel yesterday after a 13 hour 50 minute marathon in cold and choppy waters.

The Suffolk county councillor is hoping to have raised thousands for Clic Sargent and St Nicholas' Hospice, in Bury.

After months of rigorous training Paul, 44, took to the seas at 6.49am yesterday and 12 hours later was just over three miles from the coast of France. After a short break treading water, he pressed on to his landing point, where he emerged tired but triumphant and was greeted by cheering locals.
