Council receives plans for new flats

Plans which could see 29 new affordable flats built in Bury St Edmunds have been submitted to St Edmundsbury Borough Council.

The application by Havebury Housing Partnership proposes redeveloping the former school yard car park site in Risbygate Street to build 17 one bed and 12 two bed flats.

In a letter supporting the application, Kevin Marshall, the council’s senior housing development officer, said: “Opportunities for developing much needed affordable housing in Bury are limited and this sites’ close proximity to a range of services and employment opportunities provides for a very sustainable location.”

Cllr Paul Hopfensperger, chairman of the Risbygate Street Traders Association, has objected ‘in the strongest possible terms’ to the proposal, instead wanting any development to include shops on the ground floor and flats above.
