Council makes a U-turn on estate’s football pitch
A FOOTBALL club manager is ‘relieved’ at a council’s apparent U-turn on its decision to move his club off its home pitch on Moreton Hall.
Steve Clarke, manager of Bury Bowl FC, said he was told by Abbeycroft Leisure, which organises the let of the pitch in 10 Acre Field, that it ‘wasn’t profitable enough because it had no changing rooms’ and could no longer be used by his Sunday league club.
He secured a new home for the start of the 2012/2013 season but this week, after two more clubs expressed interest in Moreton Hall’s only adult pitch, St Edmundsbury Borough Council seemed to have a change of heart.
A spokeswoman for the council said the Moreton Hall pitch was ‘under used’ and in ‘poor condition’ so it was agreed Bury Bowl FC could be offered a better pitch elsewhere.
“The intention was that the pitch would become a spare pitch which could be brought into use should ground conditions at other borough owned venues become unplayable,” she said, adding that the decision was being reviewed because of fresh enquiries from new teams.
Mr Clarke said moving from the pitch his club had played at since being formed in 2006 would have cost them hundreds of pounds more.
He added that it ‘has the best surface in Bury’ as it is on a slope, which allows water to drain off easily.
