Council in Bury St Edmunds to discuss 150 per cent tax for owners of homes left empty for more than two years

Councilors at St Edmundsbury Borough Council will vote on a Council Tax freeze for the majority of taxpayers at a meeting on Tuesday night.

They will discuss the budget which includes charging 90 per cent of the tax bill to landlords of empty homes – they have previously been exempt.

Those who leave a home empty for more than two years will have to pay 150 per cent under the proposals.

The council say the changes are to encourage landlords to bring empty homes back into use to alleviate some of the pressure on the housing waiting list.

Meanwhile second home owners will have discounts cut from 10 to five per cent.
